Bioenergy Europe celebrates the EU’s Bioenergy Day in November, marking the month when bioenergy alone could sustain the Union’s energy needs for the year. Each EU country has its National Bioenergy Day, showcasing how bioenergy liberates communities from fossil fuels, cutting greenhouse gases and energy costs.
Over two decades, Lithuania shifted from relying on Russian gas imports to a bioenergy-powered system. Portugal utilizes biomass from city green spaces to offer cost-effective, sustainable heating for schools, combating energy poverty. In Romania, community-based systems use local green waste for energy, preserving the environment while fostering local jobs and businesses.
Bioenergy Europe highlights numerous similar success stories across the EU, underscoring bioenergy’s role in energy security and green transition. It’s the primary renewable energy source in the Union, applicable to heat, electricity, and transportation. By 2020, it heated over 15 million EU households, equivalent to Germany, France, and the Netherlands combined.
Amid geopolitical uncertainties, transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy emerges as crucial for Europe’s energy security. Jean-Marc Jossart, Bioenergy Europe’s secretary-general, emphasizes the necessity to shift away from fossil fuels for energy needs.
