In a groundbreaking move, Egypt has unveiled its ambitious strategy to adopt biogas technology as a sustainable solution to meet its energy demands. Biogas, a renewable energy source derived from the processing of various raw materials, such as agricultural and municipal waste, is already successfully harnessed in numerous locations worldwide.
Karima Hussein, a prominent official representing the Egyptian Ministry of Environment, revealed that the decision to embrace biogas technology was sparked after the conclusion of a crucial climate summit held in Sharm El-Sheikh during November of last year. The summit prompted the government to prioritize waste disposal, a pivotal aspect intertwined with climate change. After several triumphant pilot initiatives, the ministry proposed implementing biogas technology on a larger scale.
Hussein emphasized that the biogas technology revolves around the efficient recycling of solid and liquid waste from diverse sources, including sewage, agricultural byproducts, and organic waste. The process is not only environmentally friendly but also economically viable, generating a new and renewable energy source that substantially reduces reliance on traditional fossil fuels like petroleum.
This move towards biogas technology aligns perfectly with Egypt’s vision of a circular and green economy, further reinforcing the country’s commitment to managing waste in an environmentally responsible manner. Consequently, the adoption of a new law governing waste management complements this progressive endeavor.
Dr. Tariq Al-Arabi, the CEO of the Waste Management Regulatory Agency, also shared promising developments in the biogas sector. Notably, 1,660 household biogas units have already been successfully installed in various governorates, indicating a strong drive towards decentralized energy production.
Addressing the issue of electronic waste, Al-Arabi highlighted that the Ministry of Environment has granted licenses to 18 recycling facilities dedicated to electronic waste processing. Additionally, the ministry is working diligently to update technologies for medical waste recycling in hospitals. Plans to engage the private sector in medical waste disposal are also underway, ensuring comprehensive and sustainable waste management practices.
