Biokraft, situated in Södertörn, Sweden, has marked a significant achievement with the successful delivery of its inaugural batch of bio-LNG from a newly constructed liquefaction plant linked to its biogas facility. The initial shipment, comprising 34 tonnes of bio-LNG, is destined for use in trucks across northern Europe. Remarkably, each container can hold up to 17 tonnes of this bio-LNG, providing ample fuel for a fully loaded long-haul truck to travel approximately 50,000 kilometers, all while contributing to fossil-free driving.
What sets Biokraft’s biogas apart is its complete freedom from fossil fuels. It originates from the digestion of food scraps and waste from slaughterhouses, primarily sourced from municipalities in Greater Stockholm. The innovative liquefaction plant, conveniently situated adjacent to the digesters in Södertörn, employs a cooling process to transform biomethane into liquid form. This unit, boasting a remarkable annual production capacity of 220 GWh, stands as the world’s largest of its kind, capable of generating 50 tonnes of bio-LNG per day, according to Biokraft.
The benefits of this venture extend far and wide. The expansion into liquefaction empowers Biokraft to tap into a wider market encompassing heavy road transportation, shipping, and various industrial sectors. The appeal of bio-LNG lies in its impressive energy density per unit volume, rendering it suitable for long-distance transportation while remaining cost-effective.
Initiated two years prior, the Stockholm bio-LNG project has been a testament to dedication and determination. With an investment of approximately SEK 330 million (€27.7 million), the project secured funding through equity, bond loans, and government investment support from Klimatklivet. Matti Vikkula, the CEO of Biokraft, hailed the project as a pivotal moment, cementing the company’s standing as a premier bio-LNG producer in Europe’s Northern markets.
Jean Collin, Senior Project Director at Biokraft, expressed pride in overseeing a project that was executed reasonably well despite challenges. The collaborative efforts of the entire team, as well as the partnerships with suppliers and associates, were instrumental in realizing this achievement.
As the Stockholm bio-LNG project enters its commissioning phase, several months will be dedicated to scaling up production, fine-tuning functions, and testing delivery parameters. Anticipating a seamless transition to regular production by year-end, Biokraft’s innovative leap into bio-LNG production promises to reshape the energy landscape of Europe’s transportation and industrial sectors.
