Under the National Bioenergy Programme (NBP), initiated in November 2022, the central government of India has taken significant strides towards sustainable energy. A total of six compressed natural gas (BioCNG) plants and 11,143 small biogas plants have been commissioned so far, as shared by RK Singh, the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, in a written response to a query in the Lok Sabha.
The distribution of the BioCNG plants is as follows: three in Maharashtra, and one each in Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, a substantial number of the small biogas plants are situated in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Punjab.
Spanning until March 2026, the National Bioenergy Programme (NBP) boasts a budget of Rs 1,715 crore (€188.3 million) and is structured in two phases. The initial phase, with a budget of Rs. 858 crore (€94.2 million), provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to facilitate the establishment of Bioenergy plants. This program signifies a determined effort by the government to drive renewable energy adoption and foster a greener future.
