Positioned within the Maryland Food Center campus in Jessup, MD, this state-of-the-art organic recycling facility represents a major leap forward in sustainable technology. A standout feature of the facility is its distinction as the state’s inaugural anaerobic digester of its size, ushering in an innovative era of waste management.
The facility boasts the impressive capacity to recycle a substantial 110,000 tons of organic material annually. This process culminates in the generation of approximately 312,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas, a noteworthy contribution to the renewable energy sector. Additionally, the facility yields a commendable output of 16,575 tons of nutrient-rich soil amendment, which significantly bolsters agricultural and other land uses.
Perhaps the most striking impact of this endeavor is its far-reaching environmental implications. By curtailing the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, the Bioenergy Devco Maryland Bioenergy Center’s efforts are equivalent to the positive environmental effect of preserving 69,061 acres of US forests for a year. To put this into perspective, this achievement is a monumental 82 times the expanse of New York City’s Central Park.
