To Boost Waste to Energy Facility in North Carolina, Montauk Announces Partnership

Montauk Renewables, a renewable energy company, has entered into a Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) Agreement with Duke Energy, a major energy provider. The agreement pertains to Montauk’s upcoming waste-to-renewable energy facility, situated in Sampson County, North Carolina, USA. This partnership will significantly bolster Duke’s renewable energy initiatives within the state.

Montauk is currently in the process of building the Turkey Creek facility, which will utilize its proprietary near-zero emissions conversion technology. The facility will be operated by a subsidiary under Montauk’s ownership. Its primary purpose is to transform swine waste into multiple forms of renewable energy, including electricity and renewable natural gas, as well as producing biochar fertilizer.

The contractual arrangement spans a 15-year period, wherein Duke Energy will purchase both the electricity and the associated swine waste Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from the conversion process. The anticipated production of up to 47,000 RECs annually is contingent upon the facility’s full commissioning.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Montauk Renewables’ CEO, Sean McClain, highlighted the significance of collaborating with Duke on this innovative swine waste-to-renewable energy endeavor. He emphasized that this project holds promise for benefiting local communities in eastern North Carolina while contributing to global environmental goals.

Upon completion and full operation, the initial phase of the facility is poised to generate substantial quantities of renewable electricity, Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), and biochar, which can be utilized as fertilizer. This initial output has the potential to power more than 5,000 homes and businesses throughout eastern North Carolina. Additionally, the project aids Duke Energy in meeting its obligation to manage swine waste under North Carolina’s Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard law.

Montauk Renewables is actively engaged in constructing the facility and foresees its full operational status being achieved in the first half of 2025. The collaboration with Duke Energy marks a significant stride towards expanding renewable energy capacity while addressing waste management concerns in the region.
