Ibirapuera Park, located in São Paulo, Brazil, has achieved a significant milestone by inaugurating a state-of-the-art recycling center, marking its transition to a ‘zero waste’ status. The park’s latest initiative involves an innovative process that involves sorting and breaking down the prunings and plant matter present in the park. This organic material is then transformed into biomass, which serves as an abundant and renewable energy source.
The impact of this endeavor extends beyond the park’s boundaries. The park’s waste materials have found a valuable purpose in contributing to the energy demands of cement production kilns. This innovative solution aligns with sustainable practices and promotes environmental consciousness.
Starting from 2020, Ibirapuera Park has succeeded in recycling an impressive 380 tons of waste. This impressive figure encompasses a wide range of recyclable materials, including glass, plastic, metal, paper, and electronics. Moreover, the park has taken a proactive stance against waste by effectively repurposing green coconut husks that would otherwise end up in landfills. The division of this waste by category reveals 173 tons of recyclables and 212 tons of coconut husks collected over this period.
This significant accomplishment is an integral part of Ibirapuera Park’s overarching Eco 360 project, embodying the park’s commitment to comprehensive environmental sustainability. It stands as a notable stride toward achieving alignment with Urbia’s Park Waste Management Plan.
Under the current administration, Ibirapuera Park has achieved remarkable progress in waste management. An impressive 10,747 tons of waste, encompassing both recyclable and non-recyclable materials, have been gathered. Among these, coconut waste dominates at 63.7%, followed by organic waste at 29.9%, vegetation at 4.8%, and recyclables at 1.6%. Astonishingly, the disposal of coconut shells alone generates a monthly waste volume of up to 250 tons.
