Testing Green Ammonia Technology

A significant initiative has commenced its testing phase, targeting the reduction of ammonia emissions from livestock operations and the potential production of hydrogen. The PigProGrAm scheme, benefiting from substantial funding of £600,000 (€703.1k) courtesy of the UK government, has introduced ammonia-harvesting technology at a pig farm involved in trials.

The project seamlessly integrates agricultural and engineering expertise to offer a farm-centric solution for extracting green ammonia from pig waste, which in turn could pave the way for hydrogen generation. Leading industry players, including AHDB, Beta Technology, the University of Leeds, Duynie Feed, a North Yorkshire commercial pig unit, and Membracon, a specialist in water treatment and recycling, form the research consortium.

Incorporating the newly developed Downflow Gas Contactor (DGC) technology, the project aims to catalyze a path for the livestock sector’s sustainable evolution. This patented and multi-award-winning technology, with applications ranging from industrial carbon capture to biogas enhancement, is poised to play a pivotal role. Aman Sohl from Membracon highlighted, “The DGC will be used on this ambitious project to help generate a route for the livestock sector to become truly sustainable; considering the true practices of a circular economy, while retaining a sound financial profile to continuing operations.”

Zanita Markham, responsible for projects and engagement relationships at AHDB, expressed her optimism about the PigProGrAm project. She envisions it as an initial step towards showcasing the potential of this innovative approach to extracting green ammonia from livestock. Moreover, she anticipates its contribution to the UK’s pursuit of its net-zero emission target. By enhancing public perception and positively impacting the environmental impact of pig farming, the project holds the potential to reshape the industry’s landscape.
