Over the past decade, the federal government proudly declares that it has successfully lured a substantial $2 billion in investments into the burgeoning renewable energy sector. The revelation came through a statement issued in Abuja by Mutari Ibrahim, the Director of Promotion and Outreach at the Rural Electrification Agency.

The agency’s remarkable achievement in garnering substantial financial support in recent years is nothing short of impressive. Key partners in this endeavor include global powerhouses such as the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Global Alliance for People and Planet, the Rocky Mountain Institute, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. These partnerships have collectively propelled the renewable energy sector towards an unprecedented trajectory.

Beyond this star-studded list, the Rural Electrification Agency has forged alliances with several other significant players. The Sustainable Energy for ALL, Agence Française de Développement, the United Kingdom Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility, the European Union, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, the Global Environment Facility, and the United States Agency for International Development, among others, have all played vital roles in this transformative journey.

To put this colossal effort into perspective, the agency proudly boasts the completion of over 1,403 projects, all of which have been made possible through substantial capital investments. These projects have been instrumental in the electrification of various regions, utilizing solar street lights, mini-grid projects, standalone home systems, and grid extension works. Notably, over 500MW of power has been delivered, significantly brightening numerous communities and improving the livelihoods of the residents. This massive undertaking hasn’t just lit up homes; it has also generated an impressive 500,000 new jobs, contributing to socio-economic growth in the process.
