Nigeria, as the largest oil and gas producer in Africa, has been plagued by oil theft and pipeline vandalism, exacerbating energy poverty. Over 92 million Nigerians lack access to affordable electricity, resulting in an annual economic loss of $26.2 billion.
To address this issue, Nigeria can invest in renewable energy, particularly hydrogen production using solid waste from homes and industries. With a population of over 200 million and an annual waste generation of 32 million tonnes, Nigeria can produce substantial hydrogen, fostering economic development, reducing emissions, and enhancing energy accessibility.
Effective green hydrogen production in Nigeria can enhance its economic competitiveness and bolster electricity exports to neighboring nations, such as Ghana, Togo, Niger, and Cotonou.
