Delta State to Enbrace Renewable Energy Strategies

The imperative challenge faced by Africa and developing nations in accessing cost-effective, renewable energy sources demands synchronized action from sub-national governments. The Nigerian Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy (NREEEP) aims to enhance energy supply, emphasizing renewable sources, energy efficiency, and inclusive energy access. This policy seeks to address various objectives, including cleaner energy, improved security, and environmental sustainability.

A report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IREA) predicts that by 2050, Nigeria could meet 60% of its energy demand through renewables, significantly reducing natural gas and oil consumption. This shift is crucial given Nigeria’s growing population and economic challenges. Energy concerns have become central globally, highlighted by issues such as shortages, rising prices, and climate change implications, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7).

Delta State, an oil-producing region, grapples with energy deficiencies, impacting rural poverty and migration to urban centers. Addressing this energy poverty is crucial for economic development and job creation. To combat this, the state government, guided by the M.O.R.E Agenda, aims to invest significantly in sustainable and affordable energy sources like solar and wind power.

The state government, led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, faces the critical task of optimizing energy supply and ensuring sufficiency through diverse sources such as solar, wind, natural gas, hydroelectric power, and other renewables. This strategy is vital for the state’s economic growth, impacting essential services like healthcare, education, and security, ultimately enhancing the lives of its residents. The success of this approach will not only improve the state’s economic prospects but also contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
